Celebs who stayed with their cheating spouses
Thanks to the added pressures of living in the Hollywood unflinching spotlight, celebrity marriages seem more vulnerable than most. Of course, all couples face trials and tribulations, but famous people are forced to work out their romantic troubles in a public setting, even when infidelity is involved. And when news of a cheating spouse breaks, it’s all too easy to forget that there is a real-life couple at the center of the tabloid drama.
While not all couples survive when hit by allegations of infidelity, there are some celebs that have refused to give up on their marriages. From multiple affairs, to monetary extortion, to international scandals, a handful of stars have recommitted to their marriages in the wake of devastating revelations. Here we look at some of the most famous relationships that have survived in spite of one spouse admitting that they’ve cheated.
Khloé Kardashian and Lamar Odom
Reality star Khloé Kardashian and basketball player Lamar Odom met in 2009, and got married only one month later, according to People. Unfortunately, the whirlwind romance was plagued by cheating rumors. In 2016, Kardashian opened up to Howard Stern on his Sirius XM show saying, “Lamar was so great at making me feel like I was the only one and I’m this princess. I never speculated cheating.” When asked how she eventually found out, Kardashian explained, “So, like, nothing was on, like, his cell phones. … He had an assistant. They were all on his assistant’s phone, so he was really crafty.” She also suggested, in a 2014 episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians (via E! News), that she’d stayed with Odom, even after finding out about his infidelities saying, “Last year on my birthday I lied to everyone. Because I had to lie and say I was with my husband. When, in fact, my husband was missing with another girl.”
However, in December 2013, Kardashian finally filed for divorce. But divorce proceedings were halted in 2015 when Odom was found unconscious in a Nevada brothel having overdosed on drugs. A source told E! News that Kardashian was “completely inconsolable and heartbroken” about Odom’s condition, which left the athlete in a coma for several days. Kardashian and Odom’s divorce was called off following the shocking incident while Kardashian supported Odom’s recovery, ABC News confirmed. Their divorce was eventually finalized in December 2016.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z
Jay-Z and Beyoncé got married in April 2008, but rumors of infidelity followed the couple. In the track “Sorry” from Beyoncé’s 2016 album Lemonade, she sang, “He only want me when I’m not there / He better call Becky with the good hair.” Other lyrics such as, “If you try that s*** again / You gon’ lose your wife,” from “Don’t Hurt Yourself”, seemed to reveal that Beyoncé had been working through some serious marital issues for some time.
Jay-Z opened up about all of the insinuated cheating in an interview with T Magazine in November 2017. He told interviewer Dean Baquet that through therapy, he realized he had a deep-seated emotional block that stemmed from his tough upbringing. This guarded nature led him to “go into survival mode” and “shut down all emotions,” leaving him unable to “connect” with women. “And then all the things happen from there: infidelity,” the “Big Pimpin'” rapper said, trailing off.
Jay-Z later told David Letterman on an April 2018 episode of his Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction (via The Hollywood Reporter), “Much like you I have a beautiful wife who was understanding and who knew that I’m not the worst of what I’ve done and who did the hard work of going to therapy.” Jay-Z also shared that recommitted to Beyoncé, saying, “I want to have the emotional tools that it takes to keep my family together.”
Hillary and Bill Clinton
In a televised conference on January 26, 1998, Bill Clinton said the now unforgettable phrase, via TIME, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.” However, after testifying before a grand jury on August 17, 1998, the former president revealed in a press conference (per CNN), “I did have a relationship with Miss Lewinsky that was not appropriate. In fact, it was wrong. It constituted a critical lapse in judgment and a personal failure on my part for which I am solely and completely responsible.” Lewinsky wasn’t the only woman with whom Clinton is alleged to have had an affair. According to TIME, Paula Jones “accused Clinton of sexual harassment in 1994. Jones claimed she suffered emotional damage after Clinton exposed himself to her in an Arkansas hotel room in May of 1991.”
Despite his indiscretions, Hillary Clinton stuck by her husband, even when he was impeached in December 1998. She has also publicly defended his actions to this day. When asked by CBS Sunday Morning correspondent Tony Dokoupil in October 2018, “In retrospect, do you think Bill should’ve resigned in the wake of the Monica Lewinsky scandal?” Hillary replied, “Absolutely not.” And as for whether the president’s actions were an abuse of his power, the former first lady replied, “No. No.” Instead, she continues to stand by her husband’s side.
Cardi B and Offset
Cardi B and Offset’s marriage has faced several rumors of infidelity. In December 2017, Offset’s phone was allegedly hacked, and footage of what looked like the rapper in bed with another woman was leaked online. The “Bodack Yellow” star addressed the rumors, telling Cosmopolitan in February 2018, “I know I could get any man I want — any basketball player, football player. But I want to work out my s**t with my man, and I don’t got to explain why.” She concluded, “It’s not right, what he f***ing did — but people don’t know what I did, ’cause I ain’t no angel.”
In December 2018, Cardi B posted a video on Instagram (which she has since deleted) explaining that she’d split from Offset, with whom she has daughter Kulture. She revealed, “You know I’ve been trying to work things out with my baby’s father for a hot minute now … It’s nobody fault I guess we just grew out of love, but we are not together anymore. It might take time to get a divorce and I’m going to always have a lot of love for him because he is my daughter’s father.” However, in January 2019, Offset got a neck tattoo of his wife’s name, and in February 2019, Cardi B told People that she and Offset were “taking things slow.” She added, “It takes time. And it’s a marriage and there’s a child involved.”
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott got married in Fiji in 2006 after their respective divorces, per People. But in December 2013, Us Weekly reported (via Radar Online) that McDermott had cheated on his wife after a night at a vodka bar in Toronto, Canada. McDermott’s fling, Emily Goodhand, told Us Weekly, “He was romantic and very complimentary. He was telling me, ‘You’re so beautiful.'” She also revealed, “And he told me he and Tori had a sexless marriage. I believed him.” Following the news of the affair breaking, McDermott admitted on an episode of True Tori, via People, “I feel shame. I’ve never felt shame before.” He continued, “You were at a Christmas event, and I was f***ing around. That’s disgusting.”
Spelling told E! News in March 2016, “I can 100 percent move past the infidelity.” She continued, “The stuff that I cannot move past is the behaviors in the relationship — the things that weren’t being communicated, the anger in the relationship — things that really had nothing to do with infidelity itself.” Spelling also defended her right to work on her marriage saying, “I believe that women have the power and it was a choice and people can judge me and say, ‘Well she stayed with him.’ But I think it’s more powerful to make the choice to try to heal the relationship and work on it and work through it if you truly love someone.”
Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne
Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne got married on July 4, 1982, but their relationship hasn’t always been smooth sailing. The couple welcomed three children together — Aimee, Kelly, and Jack — between the years of 1983 and 1985, per CBS News, but the marriage hit a low point in 1989 when Ozzy tried to strangle Sharon. Recalling the terrifying moment, Sharon rather blithely told The Guardian in 2001, “I didn’t press charges but he went into rehab for three months. He was totally insane from all the drink and drugs he was doing, and well, these things happen.” Despite the incident, they stayed together.
But in May 2016, after almost 34 years of marriage, Sharon and Ozzy announced they were splitting up. The same month, Sharon appeared on The Talk and explained, “I honestly … have no idea what I’m going to be doing with the rest of my life … I’m 63 years of age, and I can’t keep living like this.” However, a reconciliation was reported in July, and Ozzy entered “intense therapy” for sex addiction in August 2016 (per People).
In a 2017 interview with The Telegraph, Sharon revealed the extent of her husband’s cheating, candidly saying, “He had women in different countries. Basically, if you’re a woman giving Ozzy either a back rub or a trolley of food, God help you.” Sharon also told the publication that she discovered Ozzy’s cheating when he accidentally sent her an email meant for one of his mistresses.
David Boreanaz and Jaime Bergman
David Boreanaz is synonymous with his iconic roles in Angel and Bones, but he’s also dealt with his fair share of real-life relationship drama. When faced with an alleged extortion attempt in 2010 by a mistress, Boreanaz revealed to the public that he was unfaithful to his wife, Jaime Bergman. Speaking to People in May 2010, Boreanaz said, “I was associated with a woman who I was involved with and had a relationship with. She asked for money.” The outlet reported that Boreanaz had already confessed the infidelity to Bergman the year before, but he decided to make the public admission to get out ahead of his mistress’ alleged extortion attempt.
Following the shocking revelations, Bergman stood by her husband, and told People, “There’s anger. There’s hurt. There’s disgust. But there is a love.” Despite her husband’s infidelities, Bergman said that she decided to fight for her marriage: “For me to walk away from that, I don’t think would be the right thing to do.” In October 2011, Boreanaz told TV Guide that the affair actually strengthened his marriage revealing, “In a sacred ground like marriage, you find yourself out of it at certain times for reasons unknown that can be destructive.” The actor continued, “There could be a demon that kind of comes out and overtakes you.” Which, coming from one of the stars of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is strangely believable.
Kevin Hart and Eniko Parrish
Comedian Kevin Hart has nothing but praise for his wife, Eniko Parrish, who he married in August 2016. However, the couple’s relationship was put to the test when the actor revealed in September 2017 that an extortion attempt had been made against him, according to People. Hart posted an Instagram apology regarding the incident, after an unnamed party tried to use an inappropriate and “sexually suggestive” video of the Night School star against him. On Instagram, Hart wrote, “Sending so many apologies to my wife and kids. I gotta do better and I will. I’m not perfect and have never claimed to be … I love you all.” Two months later, he appeared on The Breakfast Club, saying he was “guilty,” “wrong,” and that the incident was “not the finest hour of [his] life.”
Opening up to People in 2018, Hart explained that his marriage to Parrish had survived the allegations: “The friendship that I have with my wife is insane. Yes, that’s my wife, we’re lovers, it’s a relationship, it’s marriage … but the friendship we have is like no other.” Detailing the difficult journey they’d been on together, Hart said, “Sometimes those tests come from stupidity. But it’s how you handle it, and how you decide to move forward from it.” According to E! News, Parrish and Hart welcomed their first child together, Kenzo, in November 2017. Hart already had two children, daughter Heaven and son Hendrix, from his previous marriage.
David Letterman and Regina Lasko
According to Entity, talk show host David Letterman started dating his now-wife, Regina Lasko, in 1986. The couple married in 2009, and their son, Harry Joseph Letterman, was born in 2003. But Letterman’s family life was threatened when his infidelities with an assistant on his show were widely-publicized. CBS News reported in October 2009 that a $2 million extortion attempt had been made against Letterman, using photocopies of diary pages kept by his former mistress, Stephanie Birkitt, detailing their intimate relationship. According to CBS News, it was allegedly Birkitt’s former partner, “long-time CBS News producer Robert ‘Joe’ Halderman,” who tried to blackmail Letterman with diary pages, emails, and other evidence.
Letterman apologized for cheating on his wife with female members of staff during a monologue on his show. After addressing the allegations, the comedian said (via CNN), “Now the other thing is my wife, Regina.” He revealed, “She has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it’s your responsibility, you try to fix it.” Letterman pledged to work on his marriage, telling the audience, “Either you’re going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you’re going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed, so let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me.”
Vanessa and Kobe Bryant
Kobe and Vanessa Bryant got married in April 2001, however, Bryant’s incredible basketball career was overshadowed in 2003 when he was accused of sexual assault. According to TIME, a 19-year-old front-desk clerk at a clinic in Vail, Colorado, where Bryant had gone to have knee surgery, claimed that she’d had a sexual encounter with the athlete in his room and that it was nonconsensual. Bryant was subsequently arrested, but the charges against him were dropped in 2004. He released a statement to the Associated Press (via ESPN) in September 2004, saying, “Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did.”
Bryant’s wife stuck by him throughout the sexual assault scandal which took place while they were married. However, in December 2011, Vanessa Bryant filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences,” according Fox Sports. But by January 2013, the Bryants called off their divorce. The basketball star took to his official Facebook page to reveal the news saying, “I am happy to say that Vanessa and I are moving on with our lives together as a family. When the show ends and the music stops, the journey is made beautiful by having that someone to share it with. Thank you all for your support and prayers!”
