A prequel to the smash hit film Grease is in the works. Paramount Pictures is bringing back fan favorites Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsen in the new movie Summer Loving.
Deadline has confirmed the new project is a go and will be derived from the hit song, ‘Summer Nights’. Fans know the tune from Grease is where Danny and Sandy tell their friends about their summer at the beach together. Their memories of their time together are entirely different, but the underlying message is they both had a thing for each other.
Tell me more, tell me more… about what happened before!

Now fans will get to watch the romance of young Danny and Sandy meet, as well as fall in love at the beach. The setting also means the flick will take place in the 1950s, as the two prepare for their final year in high school. It is a time of first-love, summer fling and two people who are complete opposites connect on a deeper level.
Summer Loving is in the beginning stages right now, so there are very little details known at this time. Paramount does not even have a script, just the idea but the studio has reportedly already begun feeling out what will play the iconic roles. Obviously, John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John are too old to bring back the famous characters.
In 2016, Fox aired a live version of Grease, starring Julianne Hough as Sandy and Aaron Tweit as Danny. It earned mix reviews from diehard fans of the movie, but the two stars did a decent job considering it was live, as well as the big shoes each one had to fill.
Since Summer Loving is a prequel to Grease, some fan favorites, like Rizzo and Kenickie, as well as the rest of the Pink Ladies and T-Birds won’t be in the new flick.
There could be a way to incorporate them into the movie if writers choose to tell Danny and Sandy’s meeting as a flashback. Again though, no details are confirmed, so all story ideas are pure speculation at this point.
A Grease prequel is in the works, but fans are going to have to wait a while before it will hit theaters. The movie just got greenlight and is currently in the planning phase. What do you think about Paramount moving forward with Summer Loving over 50 years after fans first met Danny and Sandy?
